The coals (also called carbon brushes) supply the rotor of the alternator with electricity. Due to the rotation of the rotor, they are worn down over time, at some point they are completely worn out and no longer make contact. Then the generator can no longer supply the on-board network with energy and it is time to replace the coals.
Tip:
Before the coals are completely sanded off, the charge control lamp lights up sometimes or weakly. Then the alternator or regulator isn’t broken, as is often claimed …
After replacing the coals, it can happen that the charge control lamp lights up brightly for a while. This is because the brushes have to be ground in a little before they make good contact.
